Project Fast Start
A Project "Fast Start" is a Motorola copyright facilitated workshop that significantly decreases the cycle-time required for project definition and planning. The facilitated session uses an interactive process that engages the project team to develop a well-defined and integrated project plan.
The client's project team is facilitated through a 12-task process that results in a project plan. The Fast Start technique incorporates best practice Motorola techniques that help the project team develop a common objective, understand their specific project roles and take ownership, and to formalize the project scope, schedule and resource requirements.
Fast Start also reinforces project management competency development by incorporating the principle that adults learn best by doing. Fast Start is 2 days in length at the client location and is preceded by a one-day project scoping/preparation review of the client's project .
The specific outputs of Fast Start are:
- Project Initiation Document - to include the project objective statement, deliverables, benefits, and strategy;
- Statement of Work - includes the identification of applicable specifications, assumptions, constraints, and critical success factors;
- Project deliverables;
- Project constraint assessment;
- Project organization chart;
- Stakeholder listing;
- Project risk log;
- Work Breakdown Structure;
- Detailed schedule;
- Resource estimate; and,
- Action plan forward.
Fast Start is led by an experienced Project Management Facilitator who guides the project team and who serves as a senior level coach throughout the process. The facilitator is supported by an expert scheduler/project controls specialist. This person develops the schedule real-time, based on the project team's output during the session.
Fast Start can be supported by a variety of commercially available project management software specified by the client.
Fast Start has been successfully used on over 100 projects, ranging from large to small and from complex technical projects (e.g. defense, semiconductors, software and hardware, research, technology, etc.) to administrative projects (process improvements, service, training, human resources etc.).
