The cost of employee turnover directly hits the 'bottom line'.
It only makes sense that doing whatever you can to successfully integrate a new employee into your organization saves you money and increases your organization's profits.
Studies have shown that employee retention is directly related to the success of the new employee's integration into the company during the first 90 days of employment. New employees don't know what they don't know. A new organization has a new culture. In fact, it is like going to a new country. When you are touring a foreign place, you have to find out how to navigate and how the system works so you can get things done. The same thing happens at a new organization.
The cost of employee turnover comes directly off the bottom line. The cost of employee turnover is 30%-40% of their annual salary. It only makes sense that doing whatever you can to successfully integrate a new employee into your organization saves you money and increases profits. Employee retention can improve by as much as 25% with a good program that integrates new employees into the organization.
Integration is much more than a one-day new employee orientation. Organizations want to get a new employee productive as soon as possible. One day Orientations often pack so much information into a short time that new employees don't remember it.
We have developed and tested a highly successful way to integrate employees with a high success rate at a low cost. It is called an Orientation Passport.
The passport contains 100 tasks the new employee must complete within the first ninety days of employment. The tasks are broken into categories such as: Company History, Company Goals, Policies, Benefits, Health & Safety, Work Group, and Key Processes.
At the end of 90 days, the new hire meets with his/her manager and reviews the items in the Orientation Passport to ensure that they have been completed. The signed passport is given to HR to file in the new employee's personnel file.
The passport provides signed documentation that is evidence that the employee has completed necessary training and has been able to restate, in his/her own words, key elements in areas that are audited within the company. These include EEO, OSHA, Malcolm Baldridge, and ISO.
When audit time comes up, auditors can just look at the passport booklets for the documentation.
The Orientation Passport provides two important elements you do not get with most orientation programs:
- The Orientation Passport is a performance support tool that gives the new hire permission to seek our answers from others outside his/her work group. The physical booklet provides an emotional safety net because it requires new hires to go into several departments to get the answers. The act of physically networking with other employees helps the new hire emotionally integrate into the company and its culture faster than getting all the information from a website.
- The passport provides signed documentation that is evidence that the employee has completed necessary training, especially in the areas of government compliance such as EEO, OSHA, ISO, etc.
One of the real strengths of the Orientation Passport is its customization options.
With a minimum order of 100, you can select the 100 tasks that best suit your organization from our 300+ statements in our database. We will also put your company's name in Gold lettering on the cover. These options come as part of the price of the passport.
For more customized options, we will be glad to work with you to develop either the passport or an entirely new employee integration system for you. Our performance consultants can help you develop a dynamic performance-based new employee orientation program that has new employees saying, "Wow! What a company!"
