In trying to find a manufacturer of Satellites, Iridium was unable to find anyone who could build and launch satellites fast enough to meet its needs. Motorola decided to build them in-house. By applying the concepts of Six Sigma and Cycle Time Reduction, the following results were achieved.

• Launched 72 satellites in three countries in less than 13 months.
• Cycle time reduction of 13X from 1st to 15th launch compared to GPS constellation.
• Manufacturing cycle time reduced by 6X versus previous satellite record.
• Improvement of 7X in factory floor utilization.
